Avon’s ORAFOL Celebrates Grand Opening of New Addition

03 Jun 2012

Avon, Conn. (May 22, 2013) – Avon’s ORAFOL Americas Inc. (ORAFOL) celebrated the grand opening of its recently completed 50,000 square foot addition at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.  The European-based company supplies a full range of reflective solutions to a variety of industries and applications, including traffic safety, vehicle conspicuity, and high visibility work wear.

More than 200 employees, customers and vendors attended the ceremony, which included guest speakers Dr. Holger Loclair, CEO of ORAFOL Europe, GmbH; Andrew McNeill, President of ORAFOL Americas Inc.; Catherine Smith, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD); Timothy Simmonds, Assistant Manager of Conservation & Load Management at Connecticut Light & Power; and Avon Town Manager Brandon Robertson.

The ceremony showcased ORAFOL’s products and growth plans for the next decade. The new addition completes Phase 1 of the ORAFOL’s $90 million “reflective material expansion program,” which is expected to add an additional 125,000 square feet to the facility by 2020. The company also expects to create 98 new jobs through the expansion program, bringing total employment in Avon to 245.

“Our vision is to become the major brand in graphics, tapes and reflective materials by 2020,” said Randall Mertz, CEO of ORAFOL Americas Inc. “Avon and Connecticut offer a supportive community, a strong local infrastructure, and an outstanding supply of highly skilled and talented employees. Our continued growth, including expanding our facilities, adding new equipment, and adding new jobs demonstrates our commitment to doing business in the state.”

In addition to the facility expansion, ORAFOL worked with representatives from Connecticut Light & Power to purchase new energy efficient equipment and take advantage of incentives offered through the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund. The company will receive approximately $740,000 in incentives for upgrades that included new lighting and a redesign of the building’s HVAC system. ORAFOL is expected to save approximately 1,600,000 kWh and 110,000 ccf annually through the energy efficiency improvements.

The fun and festivities were complimented by a strong emphasis on “giving back.” ORAFOL Americas Inc.’s customers, vendors and employees donated to three charities: Foodshare of Hartford, the ATSSA Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Andrew McNeill, President of ORAFOL, stated, “Two of the charities ATSSA and National Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation benefit the families of workers nationwide who risk their lives for all of us.  The Personal Safety segment of our business produces reflective materials that increase the visibility of workers worldwide to enhance their safety.  When tragedy strikes, however, the workers and their families get the support they need from these very worthy charities.  We also wanted to support Hartford Foodshare because those participating in the event are fortunate enough to have wonderful jobs and wanted to give something to people in need in the community.”

Many local businesses graciously donated items for a silent auction, with all the proceeds benefitting the charities. The motto for the day was “Together We Can Make a Difference,” and over $30,000 was raised for the charities.
